Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Light-Based Photofacial and Vein Treatments in Beverly Hills

To accommodate a range of cosmetic needs, we offer treatments with the Lumenis M22, a top-of-the-line device that emits intense pulsed light (IPL). At our Beverly Hills practice, we use this type of light energy to treat spots (both brown and red) and stimulate collagen production deeper in the skin to smooth fine wrinkles and improve overall skin tone. We also use it to remove fine webs of spider veins that form on the legs and elsewhere. Collections of blood vessels that become visible through the skin over time can be embarrassing. With Lumenis' M22 device, we are able to offer a non-invasive solution that fits your lifestyle and schedule. The device's unique SapphireCool tip provides continuous cooling during your treatment to maximize your comfort throughout the procedure, without decreasing its efficacy.

During an IPL photofacial treatment at Cassileth Plastic Surgery and Skin Care, we target the brown or red pigmented cells in spots with specific wavelengths of light to disintegrate them and allow new skin cells to generate, leaving the normal surrounding skin alone. The same principle works for spider veins, with the light energy focusing its impact on dark blue, purple, or red telangiectasia (as they are technically known). These common visible vessels are the result of genetics, hormone changes, weight gain, trauma, or a more sedentary lifestyle. Spider veins are strictly cosmetic and are not dangerous or cause for concern. In contrast to our light-only treatment, we also offer an injectable solution to those pesky spider veins that may be too large to eradicate completely with IPL alone. Sclerotherapy injections are ideal for collapsing more pronounced veins, but IPL vein treatment is more appropriate for finer webs of vessels that are especially close to the surface of the skin. While this approach is sometimes called "laser vein removal," the IPL treatment does not use a laser, nor does it physically "remove" the vessels, but instead sends targeted light energy into them, prompting them to develop scar tissue and close. This tissue seals them off from the greater circulatory system, causing them to shrink and ultimately dissolve.

RESURFX®

Looking for quick results and an instant refresh, then the ResurFX® laser treatment is for you! ResurFX® is a non-ablative, fractional laser skin resurfacing treatment effective for treating skin concerns on the face and body. Treatment intensity can be customized based on your specific skin concerns and desired results. Even though ResurFX is a non-ablative laser, it is a powerful fractional laser that can achieve noticeable improvement in skin tone, texture and overall complexion brightening.

What skin conditions can ResurFX treat?

ResurFX can improve a variety of skin conditions, including:

What to expect from a ResurFX treatment:

Your clinician will apply a topical anesthetic to your face for about 30 minutes prior to treatment to ensure that you are comfortable throughout the session. Once you are feeling numb, your clinician will pass over your treatment area, firing laser microbeams, heating deeper layers of the dermis, stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin fibers. Depending on your skin concern and the size of the treatment area, your session may last between 15 to 45 minutes. Finally, your clinician will apply a calming balm to your face to reduce redness and irritation.

What results can I expect?

For the first 24 hours you can expect your skin to be pink and feel tight, and hot in temperature, just like a sunburn. Day 2-3 some may experience flaking/peeling of the skin, increased tightness and dryness of the skin, including welting and some swelling. Within a week after one treatment, your skin will feel softer, look brighter, smoother and more toned. You will continue to see improvements for up to six months following each session.

How many treatments will I need:

A typical regimen is a series of three treatments, done one month apart, to achieve ideal improvement—but patients will see noticeable results after one treatment.

Can I do ResurFX in combination with other treatments?

Yes, absolutely. ResurFX is great treatment as maintenance/enhancement in between more ablative laser treatments and is great in combination with more regular skincare regimen like monthly facials, or in alternation with chemical peels and microneedling.

ResurFX is most popular in combination with Intense Pulse Light Therapy (IPL), also known as PhotoFabulous. This powerful combination treatment achieves optimal skin rejuvenation.

PHOTOFABULOUS

What Is a Photo Fabulous Treatment?

PhotoFabulous harnesses the power of two powerful and effective technologies, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment and ResurFX. While the IPL treatment addressed skin issues like redness, brown spots, large pores, fine lines and rosacea, the ResurFX laser penetrates the lower layers of skin, stimulating collagen growth. PhotoFabulous is the ultimate skin rejuvenation treatment revealing younger-looking, smoother, more radiant skin.

Am I a Good Candidate for PhotoFabulous?

The perfect candidate is one who is struggling or concerned with both pigmentation AND aging.

What to expect from a ResurFX treatment:

Your clinician will apply a topical anesthetic to your face for about 30 minutes prior to treatment to ensure that you are comfortable throughout the session. Once you are feeling numb, your clinician will pass over your treatment area with the IPL followed by the ResurFX. Depending on your skin concern and the size of the treatment area, your session may last between 60-90 minutes. Finally, your clinician will apply a calming balm to your face to reduce redness and irritation.

What results can I expect?

For the first 24-48 hours you can expect your skin to be pink and feel tight and hot in temperature, just like a sunburn. Day 2-4 some may experience flaking/peeling of the skin, increased tightness and dryness of the skin, including welting and some swelling. Pigmentation areas may become darker and appear on the surface of the skin like coffee grinds. They will fall off within a couple of days. Within a week after one treatment, your skin will feel softer, look brighter, smoother and more toned. You will continue to see improvements for up to six months following each session.
