What sets me apart?

I think what really sets me apart from my colleagues is the fact that I’m a female plastic surgeon. I find that that really helps identify with my patients. For example, a lot of male plastic surgeons think that patients want to look 10 or 20 years younger than they do and I know that that’s not the case. From personal experience and from the experience of my patients, I know that a woman just wants to look really good for her age. She wants to look rejuvenated. She wants to look refreshed and she just wants to look on the outside how she feels on the inside and not necessarily look 10 years younger than she does now. I think that’s really important to be able to have that partnership with the patient where you really understand where they want to be at the end of the surgery, at the end of the recovery process.

I also only focus on the head and neck region. I did my residency in head and neck surgery. And then I did my fellowship in facial plastic surgery both reconstructive and cosmetic. I think it’s really important on one field in order to be the best in what you’re doing. You won’t find me doing a breast surgery one day and a tummy tuck the next day and then a nose job the third day. I really focus on facial plastic surgery so that I can really deliver expert results and the best results for my patients.

I think the other thing that’s unique to me is the special relationship that I have with my patients. I really think of our relationship as a partnership as it should be when you’re embarking on any procedure or any surgery. My patients know that I’m always available to them and they feel really comfortable with that idea.

My patients are always welcome to email me or call me with any questions or concerns that they may have and I always respond to them promptly. So, I think it’s really important to feel comfortable that you have this partnership with your surgeon. It’s your result but it’s my result as well. But the most important thing to me is that you’re happy with your result and the best way to achieve this is to have open communication with your surgeon and also to know they’re available to answer any questions or concerns that you may have.

What happens at a Kybella consultation?

At the initial consultation, I review with the patient what the goals are for the desired end results. I also map out a series of injections on the patient so we can try and determine how many sessions of injections that the patient will need. Then we also review the patient’s dietary history and any dietary restrictions that they may have or physical limitations that they may have to see how this product works as a part of their overall lifestyle.

Who’s a good candidate for Kybella?

Kybella is ideal for individuals with moderate to severe fullness of the submental region of the neck. It is really ideal for patients who have some good skin turgor or some thickness to the skin. These are individuals with good quality skin that can bounce back. It’s not as ideal for people to have excess skin of the neck in addition to fat. People with pre-existing excess skin of the neck may find that Kybella may exacerbate the appearance of loose skin, once the fat is dissolved.

What are some common side effects of Kybella?

The most common side effects of Kybella are minimal bruising. There could be some injection site redness. There may be some numbness anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. In addition, there may be down tenderness at the injection site and some discomfort at the injection site. The most common side effect that we’ve seen is swelling of the treatment area. The swelling can last anywhere from a few days to a full week just depending on the amount of injected that’s the one side effect that I really counsel our patients about because it can lead to some more downtime than a typical injectable.
