Rhinoplasty is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed each year in the United States. People coming to Dr. Sunder at Cassileth Plastic Surgery for rhinoplasty ask questions that come up so often that we’ve compiled a list of the most commonly asked rhinoplasty questions.
Q. How do you correct asymmetry in my nose?
Dr. Sunder specializes in cartilage grafting and meticulous removal of excess tissue. The cartilage is contoured differently in every patient’s nose. Dr. Sunder reshapes the nose as needed with a cartilage graft from inside of the nose to create the desired shape and profile.
Q. What is your secret for a natural-looking rhinoplasty?
Noses change over time, Dr. Sunder takes into account how every patient’s nose will look in 5-10 years. A nose that looks perfect in 2 months will look overdone in a year after surgery. Dr. Sunder spends a great deal of time before each surgery to carefully analyze the anatomy of the nose and project results using 3-D imaging. This attention to detail makes all the difference and it gives patients a full understanding of what the nose they’ll have after a Dr. Sunder rhinoplasty.
Q. What is the typical downtime for rhinoplasty?
Typical rhinoplasty downtime is about 1 week. The nose cast is removed 7 days after the procedure and healing will continue for at least 1 year. The results will keep looking better and better during that time!
Q. Will my nose be packed?
With Dr. Sunder’s advanced rhinoplasty techniques patients generally do not need to have packing placed in the nose. If packing is required, it is usually only in place overnight.
Q. Will my nose be broken?
Breaking of the bone generally depends on the type of nose and the size and shape the patient wants to achieve. If the patient has a hump on the bridge of the nose (a “dorsal hump”) the bones need to be broken to correct that.
