Facelift Q&A with Dr. Sarmela Sunder

Just about everyone wants to turn back the clock on aging and look like their younger self. When signs of aging around the jawline and lower face start to become apparent, it may be time to start asking what the best surgical options are to tighten the skin around your face and neck. A facelift is a great option for patients who have lost volume, are experiencing sagging facial skin, seeing pronounced wrinkles, and drooping jowls (the area along the jawline).

Beverly Hills double board certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Sarmela Sunder is an industry leader and expert in facial plastic surgery with over 7 years of extensive, intense training specializing in face and neck. Her philosophy to truly being an expert facial plastic surgeon stems from putting in the time and paying attention to every detail of her patient’s facial anatomy.

A facelift is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed each year in the United States. Many patients who come to Dr. Sunder at Cassileth Plastic Surgery for facelifts ask questions that come up often so we’ve a list of commonly asked facelift questions for our patients for your convenience.

Q. What are the most common reason people are scared of Facelifts? What do you do differently to ease patient’s concerns about this procedure?

 A. Patients are sometimes scared about their facelift procedure due to fears about general anesthesia, scarring, pain, and downtime. I address each of these fears with the following approach and technique:

1. Anesthesia:  For patients fearful of general anesthesia, Dr. Sunder offers twilight anesthesia which puts patients at ease. It also has been shown to correlate to better recovery.

2. Scarring:  Dr. Sunder recommends that her patients take a special blend of supplements prior to surgery to assist with scarring and healing. Dr. Sunder has a  unique approach to facelifts and really takes her time and employees meticulous closure techniques. Post operative care is also key in ensuring excellent healing. After surgery, patients are followed by the doctor and a post-operative care nurse who is available to patients 24/7 on the days immediately following surgery.

3. Pain: In order to address pain, very specific pre-op and post-op protocols are given to Dr. Sunder’s patients to help minimize discomfort. Many of our facelift patients have said that they experience minimal discomfort.

4. Downtime: Generally, facelift recovery time is around two weeks, this can widely depend on the patient. Our two week protocol optimizes patient’s recovery period. The recovery time is about the same time as for most non-surgical options!

Q. How do I  know if I am a good candidate for a facelift?

A. Good candidates for a facelift are people who are starting to see early signs of aging along the jawline (when the skin begins to droop), and those who are experiencing sagging skin around the face and neck.

Q. What other procedures can be combined with a facelift?

Dr. Sunder believes it is important for her patients to understand that facelifts tighten the skin but cannot restore volume around the face. In order to address volume loss (and re-plump the face) she recommends a facial fat transfer for a youthful look. Depending on the patient, she may also recommend skin resurfacing to  improve texture and elasticity. This can be achieved with a laser or a medium to full depth chemical peel. Other popular face procedures with facelifts include eyelid lifts and brow lifts.

Q. Can I achieve the same results of a facelift with nonsurgical options?

A. Absolutely not, even with the nonsurgical options you can achieve about 30% of the results of a facelift. Nonsurgical results last 3 months to 1 year depending on the age of the patient. A facelift lasts 5 to 10 years before needing a touch-up.

Q. I’ve already had a facelift but I am unhappy with the results. What can you do to help?

A. Dr. Sunder is a facial expert and true artist. She can address any issues you may be experiencing with previous work. It is important to note that everyone has a different facial anatomy. She strongly believes that the underlying anatomy is important to consider to achieve maximum results. She will generally take any type of facelift revisions after 1 year from a patient’s initial procedure.
