Wrinkles and laxity are a problem for most people as they age, prompting women and men alike to consider skin tightening at Beverly Hills' Cassileth Plastic Surgery and Skin Care. Patients who want a smoother look with more youthful contours can now choose an energy-based face and body treatment known as Profound®. This non-surgical treatment produces skin-tightening benefits similar to a facelift, but with subtler results and less downtime.
The Cassileth Plastic Surgery and Skin Care team is highly experienced with a wide range of advanced treatments and is known for helping patients safely achieve their cosmetic goals.
Starting in your mid-20s, your skin's natural collagen and elastin production processes start to break down, leading to a reduction in these proteins that are important for skin firmness. Moisture-providing hyaluronic acid levels also drop. Skin is further damaged by a combination of external elements like UV radiation and harmful lifestyle factors, such as smoking.
Due to the loss of building blocks critical for smooth, firm, supple skin, as well as a change in the volume and location of healthy facial fat, the skin often pulls away from the underlying layers of the face. This skin laxity leads to a shift in facial contours. Jowls, a "turkey wattle," and lines and creases may develop.
Minimally invasive Profound® provides a skin-tightening effect to address these issues—and more—by enhancing volume and elasticity. In studies, the skin-tightening treatment had a 100 percent response rate for wrinkles and a 95 percent response rate for skin laxity.
Profound® stimulates cells to build new collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. This nonsurgical skin-tightening alternative heats the skin to a specific temperature for an exact amount of time, delivering precise radiofrequency energy to the deeper layers, where it is most beneficial. No incisions or injections are involved—just your body's own natural processes to help you turn back the clock on aging by healing the skin from the inside out. Profound® is effective and safe on all skin tones.
Profound® is often applied for skin tightening around the mouth, cheeks, and jawline. It reduces the appearance of several aging-related skin conditions on the face, neck, and body, including:
Radiofrequency skin tightening is performed in our office under local anesthesia or in the operating room under general anesthesia. The treatment itself usually takes fortyfive minutes to one hour. We use ultrafine microneedles to deliver heat to the deep layers of skin, where it is most beneficial. We can use a direct stream of cool air to help keep the treatment area comfortable if you are awake for the procedure.
Our skin tightening patients can expect to see the best results from their Profound® session about three months after the date of their treatment. The effects are long lasting. We can't stop the aging process altogether, but we can push back the point from which it starts.
The expected downtime after a Profound® treatment is seven to 10 days. Expected mild side effects include redness, swelling, bruising, light discomfort, and possibly small bumps and pinpoint bleeding.
You will need to wash the treated area twice a day with a mild cleanser and avoid harsh cleansers and washcloths until the skin has healed. You will also need to apply a thin coat of healing moisturizer two to four times a day until the skin has healed. We suggest that you sleep with your head elevated for the first 48 hours after your skin-tightening treatment in order to minimize swelling.
To optimize your skin-tightening results, use a broad-spectrum sunblock of SPF 30+ for at least one month after the treatment. In most cases, you can begin using makeup 48 hours after your session. If you use topical acids, retinols, Retin-A, etc., you will need to wait at least seven days after your treatment to resume your regular skincare regimen.
A facelift or mini-facelift are traditional surgical procedures used for facial skin tightening. These surgeries involve removing loose skin, remodeling the underlying tissues, and positioning and securing the remaining skin. These provide a more dramatic, longer-lasting transformation than Profound® skin tightening, but require more recovery time for healing.
Dermal fillers are complementary to radiofrequency skin tightening because of their volumizing and lifting effects. Ultherapy, which uses ultrasound energy, is another nonsurgical way to tighten lax skin.
The most suitable option for you depends on your individual concerns. The Cassileth Plastic Surgery and Skin Care team will listen to your goals, assess your face, and recommend a treatment plan designed just for you.
