Under Eye

Injecting filler under the eyes is a minimally invasive non-surgical treatment with zero downtime used to treat a variety of issues under the eye including puffy under eye bags, dark circles, sagging skin under the eye, and more. For patients both young and old, filler under the eye is a safe and effective alternative to surgery.

Why would someone want under eye filler?

Patients who suffer from dark circles or are unhappy with the shadows and depressions that occur under the eye turn to under eye filler as a non-surgical treatment. For some patients these issues occur from aging and for others it can be genetic. People who have puffy bulging “bags” can fix this issue with under eye filler and give them a more awake and youthful appearance.

What is the tear trough exactly?

The tear trough, also known as the nasojungal groove, is the area beneath your eye that extends from the inner corner of your eye and follows the semicircular arc underneath of your eye. A very deep tear trough can create a shadow that appears as a dark circle below the eye. A deep tear trough can also create a division between the lower eyelid and cheek; this is an early sign of aging around the eyes. People who suffer from this issue are often told that they look more tired or older than they really are.

What causes dark circles?

The term “dark circles” is really an umbrella term for various different cosmetic concerns around the eye area. There are many different factors associated with these dark circles— usually genetics. Some people are born with less fat underneath the eyes than others; this causes an indentation commonly referred to as a tear trough hollow. It is completely normal for everyone to have a natural valley that sits above the rim of bone that encircles the eye. This valley is a natural and normal contour. However, some people have deeper valleys than others.

Outside of the genetic factor that creates dark circles, things like sun exposure, allergies, dehydration and lack of sleep can also cause the appearance of dark circles under the eye. However, sometimes even when we get enough sleep, wear proper sun block, hydrate and eat a proper balanced diet, it is still not enough to prevent these dark circles.

Aging is another factor. As we age our issues go through a phase called cellular senescence or cellular aging, where the cells that turn over aren’t as robust as the previous ones.

What issues can under eye filler fix?

  • The appearance of droopy, sagging skin under the eyes
  • Wrinkles under the eye
  • Puffy bags under the eye
  • Dark circles under the eye
  • Sagging or bulging areas under the eye

What types of fillers can you use under the eye?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are made out of a molecule naturally found in our skin and are the perfect filler for first-time patients. The beautiful advantage of HA fillers is that they’re the only type of filler that is reversible by an enzyme known as hyaluronidase which can undo the filler almost instantly.

Hyaluronic acid fillers:

  • Juvederm Volbella
  • Juvederm Vollure
  • Restylane
  • Restylane Refyne
  • Restylane Defyne

How long do they last?

Nine months to a year depending on the type of filler used.

Does it hurt?

There is little to no discomfort with this procedure. We use a blunt-tipped canula which allows for safe injection of the product without repeated needle injections. This also significantly reduces bruising and discomfort for the patient.

What is the downtime after under eye filler?

Under eye filler is an in office procedure that takes about 30 minutes and you can resume most activities right away. However, it is recommended that you avoid major physical activity for the first 24-48 hours following the procedure to minimize swelling and bruising.

What should I expect for recovery?

Recovery time varies for each patient and for each type of filler. Immediately following the procedure, you may experience some or none of the following conditions:

  • An “overfilled” appearance to treated areas
  • Swelling or bruising ranging from mild to severe
  • Temporary numbness or redness
  • Palpable lumps or hard areas at the injection site
  • Hypersensitivity reaction that can seem like an allergic reaction with hives and swelling

Most conditions can be alleviated with icing and mild massage and improvement will start to show within hours or days. However, if you are going to a special event, it is recommended to have the procedure done at least three to four weeks prior to the event to ensure that all bruising and swelling has gone away.
