Many women want more youthful breasts as they age. A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a great option for patients looking to improve the appearance of their breasts and correct issues from weight loss, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or time. For a breast lift, Los Angeles-area plastic surgeons Dr. Lisa Cassileth, Dr. Kelly Killeen, and Dr. Elise Min believe that you cannot rely on external incisions to support the breast, because the skin stretches over time and the breast can re- droop and sag. To achieve a lasting perky result, they perform an internal breast lift and create an internal corset using sutures to support the breast and take pressure off the skin. This lift creates a tighter, higher breast.
Many women come to Cassileth Plastic Surgery after undergoing a cookie cutter breast lift, giving them worse results than they had to start with. The carefully performed breast lift at Cassileth Plastic Surgery uses internal lifting techniques and appropriate implants, if they are wanted, that can give women the lasting results they desire. By improving the contour and position of the breasts, your posture can also improve, resulting in a taller-looking appearance that makes you appear more confident and allows clothes to fit in a more flattering way.

Breast lift surgery corrects the overall shape and profile of a patient's breast by addressing issues of asymmetry and sagging. There are different breast lift incision patterns available, and the most suitable one depends on the patient’s goals and anatomy. Breast lift incisions all leave scars, but they are very small and easily concealed.
Incisions can vary depending on the degree of lift necessary, from circumareolar mastopexy (around the nipple) or donut lift, to vertical or lollipop (has a vertical scar down from the nipple), and finally to the anchor or wise pattern, which is only used with excessive sagging or large reductions on pendulous breasts (includes a scar in the breast crease).
A donut lift works best on breast lift patients with mild to moderate breast sagging and only leaves a single scar. A circular incision is made along the border of the areola. A lollipop lift is meant for patients with a moderate level of sagging who need a technique that offers more room to reposition the breast tissue. It consists of one incision around the areola and another that extends vertically between the edge of the areola and the breast crease. The anchor lift includes three incisions and allows the surgeon more access to remove larger amounts of redundant skin and fat.
Pregnancy, weight fluctuations, hereditary factors, and gravity can alter your natural breast shape by causing the breasts to lose volume and elasticity. A breast lift restores the breast's natural firmness and texture. By removing any excess skin and repositioning the breast tissue, a tighter, more youthful breast appearance is achieved. Although it won’t add volume to the breasts on its own, a breast lift can make the breasts appear rounder and perkier in a bra.
This breast surgery addresses any drooping or sagging of the breast and nipple, allowing the breast tissue to be better supported. A breast lift will reposition the breast and nipple for a more natural, youthful profile and overall appearance.
Shape is just as important as size when it comes to creating attractive breasts. If you’ve had slightly droopy breasts since your teens, a breast lift can give them the perky appearance you’ve never been able to achieve. The procedure is also beneficial for restoring breasts are sagging because of aging.
Many surgeons performing mastopexies—the technical term for breast lifts—use the skin to lift the breasts, creating wide scars. The breasts then begin to droop again in a matter of weeks.
Using an innovative "auto‐augmentation" breast lift technique, Cassileth's team of plastic surgeons use the patient's own breast tissue to recreate full breasts in their restored position. An implant can also be placed if a larger breast is desired. In general, an extremely large implant should not be used just to try to "fill up" a loose breast, as this ultimately results in a hanging, large, droopy breast.
Patients should usually plan for two weeks of recovery time after a breast lift. It’s normal to experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort for several weeks. Try to avoid straining, bending, lifting, and placing too much pressure on the breasts. Patients should also try to protect the breast area from sun exposure.
Although some results will be noticeable right away, the breasts will continue to improve over several months as post-operative swelling gradually goes down and incision lines become lighter. Breast lift patients won’t be able to prevent the new effects of time and gravity, but are encouraged to preserve their results by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and stable weight.
Good breast lift candidates include patients with breasts that are small and deflated in appearance, those with large breasts that are droopy and low, and those with breasts that have a hollowed appearance on the top or a too-low nipple position due to the weight of the breast pulling it downward below the breast crease.
A breast lift can also correct breasts that have an unusual or asymmetrical shape. Breast lift surgery is most suitable for patients who have finished having children, are physically healthy, maintain a stable weight, and are non-smokers.
We always perform internal lifts as a part of our breast lift procedure. It's rare that an internal lift alone is needed. People are candidates for an internal lift for those patients who need their nipple moved up about one inch. For larger lifts, a full breast lift is required.
For patients interested in breastfeeding after a breast lift: depending on the type of lift, you may have up to a 20% reduction in the ability to breastfeed.
For many women, having children is an exciting experience—but in most cases, it often takes a toll on a woman's body and leaves lasting changes. The breasts can become saggy and deflated, as can other parts of the body, especially the stomach. Pregnancy causes the skin and ligaments of the breasts to stretch, and they are often unable to return to their original shape. The skin and muscles on the stomach may also be weakened.
A Mommy Makeover is a combination of several different procedures to help women restore their pre-pregnancy body. Usually, one of the main procedures is a breast lift. By returning your breasts to their natural, more youthful appearance, you can achieve dramatic results without the need for a breast augmentation.
In addition to its uses in a Mommy Makeover, patients often achieve good results by combining their breast lift with augmentation, breast reduction, or fat transfer breast augmentation. These procedures can also be done as standalone treatments. An augmentation typically involves silicone or saline implants and allows you to significantly increase the size of your breasts.
Although a breast lift doesn’t involve altering the size of the breasts, they can ultimately appear to be smaller because of their newly lifted position. For patients who still want to address an excess of volume, a reduction is designed to remove a significant amount of skin and tissue from the breasts, making them physically smaller.
Fat transfer helps to refine the appearance of the breasts by improving cleavage or fixing irregularities. The procedure is also beneficial for patients who want a modest size increase without implants.
