Non-Surgical Facelift Options: Ultherapy vs. Profound®

Authored By Cassileth Plastic Surgery

The average person’s skin goes through a lot over the years. Considering sun exposure, harsh weather changes, pollution, and gravitational forces, it’s challenging to maintain clear, soft, and firm skin—even if you do all the right things. Traditionally, a surgical facelift was the only way of restoring facial structure and reversing more severe signs of aging when injectables were no longer beneficial. Now, Ultherapy is one of Los Angeles’ go-to non-surgical skin tightening treatments, with Profound® serving as another highly effective surgical alternative to consider.

Before exploring the similarities and differences between Ultherapy and Profound®, it’s helpful to understand how your face shape and skin are affected by the more severe stages of damage and age. The skin eventually loses elasticity and begins to sag on the lower face, turning your once well-defined “triangle of youth” with high, round cheekbones and a sharp jawline into a “pyramid of age.” The temples and cheeks become more sunken in, and we begin to see sagging skin on the lower jaw and neck—referred to as skin folds, jowls, and turkey neck.

Ultherapy is a virtually painless, FDA-cleared skin rejuvenation treatment that applies pulses of focused ultrasound energy to the skin’s surface to remodel and tighten the skin from the inside out. The energy promotes collagen generation in targeted areas, working in deeper layers than laser and radiofrequency treatments. Ultherapy can be used to lift drooping brows, tighten skin below the chin and on the neck, and soften the appearance of wrinkles on the décolletage area. There is no recovery time needed. The structural layers of the skin improve gradually on their own for several months after a session.

Profound® is a more involved alternative that delivers radiofrequency energy with ultrafine needles. This treatment helps to lift and enhance the quality of the skin by stimulating the production of hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin through the creation of “micro-channels” that trigger a wound-healing action. This treatment is mainly used to smooth out wrinkles around the mouth, to tighten the jawline, and to volumize the cheeks. Patients typically have about seven to 10 days of downtime after treatment and experience mild swelling, bruising, and redness.
