What Areas Can CoolSculpting® Address?

Authored By Cassileth Plastic Surgery

Each person has a unique body shape and set of goals that should be taken into account when planning a body-sculpting treatment. CoolSculpting® is one of the most versatile treatments that we offer and can be used to enhance the positive aspects of your natural body type. If you’re close to your ideal weight and have dreamed about having a more sculpted body, this could be the ideal fat-reduction solution for you. At Cassileth Plastic Surgery & Skin Care, one of the most common questions patients ask us is, “What areas can CoolSculpting® help?” Our Los Angeles-based providers use it to target several key areas on the body, including:

  • Below the chin (double chin)
  • Upper arms (bat wings)
  • Back bulge
  • Bra fat
  • Flanks (muffin top or love handles)
  • Abdomen
  • Thighs
  • Below the butt (banana roll)

Each session can reduce fat volume by up to 25 percent in these localized areas.

Keep in mind that CoolSculpting® works on subcutaneous fat. This is the soft fat that can be felt directly below the skin—not the dense fat that lives deeper in the body. That said, the treatment works on just about any area of excess subcutaneous fat, typically described as “grabbable” or “pinchable.” It is perfect for fine-tuning areas where fat is more stubborn, like love handles, under the chin, or even on the upper arms.

CoolSculpting® may not be the best body-sculpting strategy for patients who are very thin with a low body fat percentage. It also works better on fat that isn’t fibrous and is better for removing small to moderate portions, whereas surgical liposuction is better for addressing larger amounts of fat. As a cosmetic treatment, it is not meant for weight reduction, so it works best on patients who are healthy and near their ideal weight. It is also not designed for facial fat, so it won’t help you to reduce chubby cheeks.

One thing to note about the deeper, more dense fat mentioned above: This is the type of hidden fat that accumulates in the deep area of the abdomen, around the internal organs. This fat can push the overlying muscles and tissues outward, which is why some people have a protruding belly with a hard texture, as opposed to the soft, wobbly fat found on other areas of the body.
